When to backup the site?

  1. Backup BEFORE doing a major update with the website such as update the theme, update WP version, update PHP version.
  2. We publish 3-4 articles or more at once, or on a weekly basis

*Backups enable us to restore the website and its content if something goes wrong while performing major updates. So, the goal is to keep copies of the website just in case. If we don't want to lose what we publish, back it up!

If there is a new WP version, there will be a notice shows up on the dashboard.

A new version of WP is not launched so often, but when it does, don't wait too long to update. Updating to the latest version protects the site from vulnerabilities.

How to backup the site?

Backup locally (copy kept within the site) and remotely (copy kept in a remote storage - in our case - Google Drive). Use 2 plugins on our site: ****

Backup with All-in-One WP Migration (locally)

  1. WP dashboard → "All-in-One WP Migration" → "Backups" → "Create Backup"

  1. Delete the old ones after the new one already created so it doesn't take too much space.

Backup with UpdraftPlus Backup/Restore (locally & remotely)

This plugin will take longer time to backup the whole site than the updraft. It could take like 15-20 minutes. So, be aware of the time frame, because sometimes it prevents us from doing other things on the site simultaneously. It might show a message like "under maintenance".
